FAILURE TO DIAGNOSE PULMONARY EMBOLISM
LEADS TO WRONGFUL DEATH
Doctors are trained to recognize signs and symptoms of illnesses of diseases. However, when a doctor fails to timely diagnose a disease, the result can be life altering for a patient.
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is blockage of one of the arteries that supplies blood to the lungs by material that originates elsewhere in the body, most commonly in the leg. The most common symptoms include unexplained breathlessness, chest pain, cough, hemoptysis, syncope, palpitations, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, cyanosis, fever, low blood pressure, right heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and leg swelling. However, these clinical symptoms are non-specific. PE is categorized as either acute or chronic. Acute PE can be fatal, with a 30% mortality rate, but mortality can be significantly reduced with treatment. It is well documented that early detection of pulmonary embolism is crucial to a patient’s outcome.
Summary of a Claim Our client, a man in his mid-50s, went to the emergency department twice after having unexplained falls. One of the tests ordered was a computed tomographic angiography (CTA) of the chest. The radiologist who reviewed the CTA failed to detect a small pulmonary embolism in the left pulmonary artery. One week later, our client collapsed and died. The autopsy showed he had developed multiple bilateral pulmonary emboli. Case settled with the doctor and the Indiana Patient Compensation Fund on behalf of the client's family for a significant amount.
